The summer 2020 ferry schedule has just been published. Ferries head north from Wrangell and Petersburg only once a week, on Sundays. That means that if one wants to explore either island, you would have to spend an entire week. So we have to choose: one week in Wrangell and skip Petersburg, or skip Wrangell and spend a week in Petersburg. Anyone have any favorites to recommend? Wrangell or Petersburg?

You might want to recheck the schedule, or possibly just talk to the staff. I'm showing that both the M/V Columbia and M/V Matanuska are on the Southeastern route this year. In general terms, it looks like on the northbound leg, the Matanuska leaves Bellingham a day ahead of the Columbia, and this seems to be the general trend both ways. Having said that, I don't know much about either location; only saw them in passing without spending anything more that 'port of call time' in either. Guess it depends on what kind of mischief you want to get into. Wrangell does have the opportunity to go on a bear watching trip to Anan Cove if that's your thing, and I'd be surprised if Petersburg didn't (maybe not to the same location, but I haven't looked into that).
