Playa Avellana is as much of a haven for surfers as it is a laid-back beach paradise for those looking to bask in the sun and explore Costa Rica’s shores.

All answers are great. One thing to add is that the car parking has people who monitor the cars for tips (something that happens a lot around Costa Rica) I would always tell them no problem but I would only tip when I got back. This way they actually are around and dont just leave whenever they want.
Anybody know anything about the nearby zip line in Playa Avellana? How far is the Liberia airport to Avellanas? Any must stops for groceries on the way in?
A:
Not sure about the Zip line. There is not much at Playa Avelenas. The airport is about 1 hour 45 mins away, and the roads are not all paved into the beach area. I would …

Where do recommend grocery shopping? How about fruit and bread each day?

Sorry for the delayed response, Nina, It's a long way to the nearest town (Tamarindo) and will require a car or other transport. Other transport will be on the order of $50-$75 USD. I'm thinking "fresh fruit and bread each day" would be a budget buster. You could "stock up" if you can convince your driver (or if you rent a car) to stop in Tamarindo on the way to the resort from the Airport on the initial visit.
Are there other beaches you can walk to from the JW Marriott?

Yes. Was just there. Go left from the Marriott. You will cross over some rocky beach areas and eventually see the Hacienda Pinilla beach club. From there south there is a very nice sandy tan beach. Continue walking and you will reach an estuary. Depending on the tide, you can wade through the the estuary and continue and shortly you will reach Lola’s on the beach. It’s probably a 40ish minute walk from the Marriott to Lola’s but well worth it!
