India's Parliament has been disrupted as opposition lawmakers protested what they said was mistreatment of 104 Indian immigrants deported by the U.S.

Opposition members have disrupted a session of the Indian Parliament, as they questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over its response to the alleged mistreatment of 104 of its citizens while being deported from the US.

One of the deportees told the BBC they had been handcuffed throughout the 40-hour flight, sparking criticism. But Jaishankar said he had been told by the US that women and children were not restrained.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Thursday that New Delhi is engaging with the U.S. to ensure that illegal Indian immigrants are not mistreated while being deported after opposition parties protested against the treatment of a group that was sent back this week.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said the government is engaging with the United States to ensure no Indian deportee is mistreated during the travel in the wake of 104 extradited nationals' claim that they were handcuffed and chained during the long journey.

His statement came a day after a US military flight brought back 104 Indians accused of entering the US illegally. One of the deportees told the BBC they had been handcuffed throughout the 40-hour flight,
