Former President Jimmy Carter recently died in his home in Plains, Ga., at the age of 100. As the 39th president of the United States, he held the distinction as the nation’s longest-living commander-in-chief.

President Jimmy Carter had no idea what he was going to do next when he delivered his farewell address to the nation in January 1981. Defeated after a single term by Ronald Reagan, he simply told Americans that he would leave the White House and “take up once more the only title in our democracy superior to that of president — the title of citizen.

After returning to Georgia, Carter established a human rights foundation and won the Nobel Peace Prize. He wrote several books and won two Grammy awards for his spoken word albums. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter traveled the world as goodwill ambassadors for the United States.
