One lucky ticket sold in Northern California won an estimated $1.22 billion jackpot in Friday's Mega Millions drawing just days before the new year.

Jackpot winners may choose whether to receive 30 annual payments, each five percent higher than the last, or a lump-sum payment. Mega Millions drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays and are offered in 45 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets cost $2 each.
