Russ Vought, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), cleared a procedural hurdle on Wednesday as the Senate voted 53-47 to advance his nomination.

Senate Democrats have begun their overnight marathon of speeches in protest of Russ Vought’s nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget. Vought is expected to be confirmed in a vote on Thursday evening.

The Senate on Wednesday teed up a final vote on the nomination of Russell Vought to lead the White House budget office. The Senate voted 53-47 along party lines on Wednesday to limit debate on Vought’s nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in the face of staunch opposition from Democrats.

Republicans have backed Russell Vought’s nomination and claim he’s prepared for the role since he led the office during Trump’s first administration.

Washington Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, ranking member on the Appropriations Committee, said if confirmed, Vought will “trample all over the separation of powers, will ignore the authority of Congress and will hurt the American people by holding back funds they rely on.”

Democratic senators are speaking through the night in protest of Project 2025 co-author Russell Vought’s nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, called him “Donald Trump’s most dangerous nominee” in a speech on the Senate floor.
