The number of norovirus cases is increasing across the US, but there are ways to reduce your chances of infection and stave off dehydration and other symptoms.

Norovirus cases are rising in New Mexico, the New Mexico Department of Health announced Jan. 3. Five outbreaks have been reported since Dec. 1 in New Mexico, according to the department.

Symptoms usually develop between 12 to 48 hours after a person is exposed to norovirus. It is also possible for someone to never show symptoms of the virus but still be contagious. The most common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain. Less common but still possible are fever, headache and body aches.

As if cold and flu season weren't bad enough, this winter is turning out to be a particularly bad one for stomach bugs. By December 11, 495 outbreaks of norovirus had been reported nationwide, compared to 393 outbreaks the same time last year,
