Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory Friday about alcohol and cancer risk and called for changes to beverage warning labels.

The U.S. Surgeon General has unveiled a plan to put cancer warning labels on alcoholic beverages. Does the science support this or is it just another hyped-up scare? And, even if the labels make perfect sense,

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy noted that consuming alcohol increases the risk for “at least seven types of cancer” including breast, colon and liver.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s call Friday to require alcohol labels warning of cancer risk will likely face strong resistance in Congress, which would have to pass a law to require the labels. The alcohol industry fiercely opposes labeling as well as stricter guidance around consumption — the government currently recommends men consume no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one — and has cultivated support among lawmakers through an expensive lobbying and political operation.

Dr Murthy has recommended placing warnings on alcohol to highlight the fact that it raises the risk of some cancers, including breast and bowel cancer. If so, America could become the third country, after South Korea and Ireland,
