Two people have died, more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed, and more than 80,000 residents have been evacuated as the Palisades Fire, which was ignited Tuesday morning by a backyard fire, has burned almost 3,000 acres. The Eaton and Hurst fires, which ignited Tuesday evening, have affected 2,000 acres and 500 acres, respectively.

The home of Vice President Kamala Harris in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles has been placed under an evacuation order by local authorities, making her one among tens of thousands of Californians whose homes have been threatened by wildfires raging through parts of Los Angeles County.

President Joe Biden’s “fire away" comment during a live update on the Los Angeles wildfires drew criticism as the death toll from the blazes rose to seven.

President Biden spoke after receiving a briefing from officials in California about the spreading wildfires. Biden pledged federal support for those impacted, mentioned that his sons' home may have been spared from the damage and shared that he became a great-grandfather.

Biden announced that the federal government will be covering 100% of the costs of the fires for 180 days. This includes costs of debris and hazard removal, first responder salaries, temporary shelters and “all necessary measures to protect life and property.
