Nov 21, 2020 · First of all, it isn’t even the flag of the CSA, it’s a flag based on a Confederate war flag that strongly conveys modern political positions like the Lost Cause. Second, the CSA only existed for five years, and no person alive today ever lived in it, whereas the GDR existed for 40 years, and there are lots of people with living memory of it.

Each icon had represented a class element that ostensibly was the constituency of the new socialist state. The wheat and hammer obviously represented the peasantry and workers.

It's there because when a flag falls due to lack of wind, the left is more visible than the center/right. I think it's the same reason USSR put the hammer and sickle/star in the canton (top left). That's why I like flags with to-the-left emblems rather than centered, the whole point is to hang it from a pole, make it like that.
