How unfortunate it is, then to learn that what they mean by "InReach Devices" is actually "InReach MINI". My $450 InReach Explorer+ will not connect to the Instinct, because for some seriously odd reason, Garmin chose to put an ANT+ chip in the $350 Mini, but not the other two more expensive screen-based mapping InReach units.

Completely separate thing. If you don't happen to have good Iridium coverage when you mark the waypoint, the inReach will remember that it should send it and do it later, when coverage is good. IIRC, to mark a waypoint directly from the map on the original Explorer, you have to push the check mark button when viewing the map.

As Tom pointed out, the inReach has no provision for swapping chips. Considering the rate at which electronic devices increase their capabilities, I suspect that Garmin will find some way to increase the capacity and hopefully an easy way to swap chips or otherwise load the maps. A larger screen would be nice, too.

The inReach also offers additional maps, including Open Street Maps and Digital Atlas of the Earth. Coverage varies by location, but is close to global. These can be downloaded from the inreach.garmin.com web site, Map tab. Look for Get More Maps, just to the right of Map Filters in the upper left corner.

Only the inReach-specific "sync" program can communicate via a wired USB connection with the inReach devices. It provides for firmware updates and moving your contacts, waypoints, and routes to the device. It also uploads detailed tracks (assuming you recorded them) to the map page on your account at inreach.garmin.com.

What I meant to suggest originally was to manually draw a route on the map at explore.garmin.com by connecting the waypoints you've already uploaded. Alternatively, if Alltrails has a track (as opposed to a collection of waypoints), you can export a .gpx track from Alltrails. Import it into the explore.garmin.com web site as a route.

So it seems my Inreach Explorer (only a couple of weeks old) is having issues with GPS. It has stopped sending tracking updates, and when sync;ed via pc there is no locations. The unit also shows the question mark on the GPS signal. I am in North Queensland Australia, on a motorcycle with clear view to the sky.

If you have the inReach SE+, that model does not feature mapping so no maps of any kind, including nautical charts, can be installed on it. If you need an inReach device compatible with nautical charts, you may want to look into the GPSMap 86sci which comes pre-loaded with BluChart G3 Coastal Charts.
