Completely separate thing. If you don't happen to have good Iridium coverage when you mark the waypoint, the inReach will remember that it should send it and do it later, when coverage is good. IIRC, to mark a waypoint directly from the map on the original Explorer, you have to push the check mark button when viewing the map.

Only the inReach-specific "sync" program can communicate via a wired USB connection with the inReach devices. It provides for firmware updates and moving your contacts, waypoints, and routes to the device. The inReach also offers additional maps, including Open Street Maps and Digital Atlas of the Earth. Coverage varies by location, but is close to global. So it seems my Inreach Explorer (only a couple of weeks old) is having issues with GPS. It has stopped sending tracking updates, and when sync;ed via pc there is no locations. The unit also shows the question mark on the GPS signal. I am in North Queensland Australia, on a motorcycle with clear view to the sky.

When connecting my Inreach Explorer+ to PC via USB it will not show the USB icon and connect. Sync app works fine, and the USB symbol will display briefly whilst Sync reboots the device. I have turned the unit on and then plugged in USB as well as plugging in USB prior to turning on, so it was off and did not display USB icon.

I left my Explorer unused for a few months. When I went to use it the battery appears flat, it does not recharge (multiple cables and chargers tried) and Windows does not recognise it. Seems a rather unsatisfactory state of affairs for the product.

Oct 31, 2024 · Earthmate, which was the program, I think, that was developed by DeLorme for the InReach, seems to be a lot easier to use than Explorer. Maybe it doesn't have more features, but I've found that Explorer is overloaded with features that don't always work as expected and just add another layer of difficulty remembering how they all work.

There are things I like about both platforms but I'm a huge inReach fan (the site, interface, topo maps, etc.). I do use Garmin's 24k topo and city nav maps for cross reference so I always have them loaded up on the Rino. I am hoping the Explorer+ and Rino will one day be able to benefit each other before the next generation appears.
