Mar 16, 2006 · We treat to prevent rheumatic fever, and treatment doesn't prevent post strep glomerulonephritis, so it is worth doing the rapid strep or culture to avoid needless treatment. Children under 3 years of age do not get rheumatic fever, and don't generally ever need to be checked or treated for strep pharyngitis.
