Jun 19, 2006 · The architect had specified 9 1/2″ TJI to span the addition (it’s approx. 37′ long and 25′ wide. Joists are running parallel to the 37′ run). Anyway, my question is, in the plans, they spec out TJI, but in the “first page” of the architect’s stuff, it says they can use I-Joist or Trus-Joist.

Cantilevering TJI joists - Fine Homebuilding
Nov 2, 2007 · The joists will run along the 24 foot axis and will be 28 feet long to make up the cantilever. I seem to be getting conflicting reports from the manufacturer. On top of this first floor deck, and, on top of the cantilever, I will be putting up SIP walls, an attic deck, and a SIP roof, the peak running the same direction the first floor joists run.

May 28, 1999 · On one hand I agree that TJI's or BCI's are considerably better than dimensional lumber. With rated spans and labor savings, 9 times out of 10 you will come out ahead....However I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Space Joists. Although more expensive than TJI's, you can increase to 24" oc and 10 times quicker to install.
Span of TJI joists w/ no center support - Fine Homebuilding
Mar 3, 2008 · The joists that span that 18 foot wide length (to create the 1st floor) are specified as 9′-6″ TJi members. They run the entire 18 foot length without any center beam with lolly collumn. My concern is when walking around on the first floor, it will deflect and not seem solid.

Nov 1, 2004 · A third alternative is to strap the underside of the I-joists with 1x4s. This approach is common on the East Coast and has the same effect as the strongback; you just have a bunch of small strongbacks instead of one or two larger ones. Use two 8d sinkers (or similar-size gun nails) and some construction adhesive at each connection.
Floor Framing Hung Off a Ledger - Fine Homebuilding
The floor system is comprised of Weyerhaeuser’s TJI joists, Microllam LVLs for ledgers, Timberstrand LSL Rim Board, and Huber’s Advantech flooring. Microllams are used where joist hangers are needed to support the TJIs and the LSL rim board is used along the parallel walls.
